May 2020 ONS Retail Sales analysis

The ONS Retail Sales Index (RSI) for May 2020 released today were better than economist' expectations, with a seasonally-adjusted month-on-month increase of 10.2% excluding fuel, against consensus forecast of 4.6%.

The headline comparable to the BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor (RSM) was a non-seasonally adjusted year-on-year value decline of 8.3% in May for large businesses, similar to the RSM 5.9% decrease published on 9 June.
