We tell the story of retail, work with our members to drive positive change and use our expertise and influence to create an economic and policy environment that enables retail businesses to thrive and consumers to benefit.

We do this in a way that delivers value back to our members, justifying their investment in the BRC. This membership comprises over 200 major retailers - whether operating physical stores, multichannel or pureplay online - plus thousands of smaller, independent retailers through a number of niche retail Trade Associations that are themselves members of BRC. 

Retail is an exciting, dynamic and diverse industry. It is a driving force in our economy, a hotbed of innovation and the UK’s largest private sector employer. Retailers touch the lives of millions of people every day, supporting the vibrancy of the communities they operate in. However, the industry is going through a period of profound change, with technology transforming how people shop, costs increasing, and growth in consumer spending slowing.

Retailing will continue to evolve and advance. Online retail will continue to grow as retailers invest in new emerging technologies; there will be fewer stores and those stores remaining will offer new experiences; there will be fewer, but better jobs and a career in retail in the future will be very different to today.

Role Purpose

Working with the Director of Food and Sustainability to deliver the retail industry environmental and ethical objectives, including the Climate Action Roadmap and taking a lead on responsible sourcing and ethical labour.  

The Role

The key accountabilities of the role will include:

  • To take the lead on developing BRC positions and representing the BRC with Government and stakeholder groups in all the UK nations on issues including:
  • Responsible sourcing of key commodities in the supply chain including timber, cotton, palm oil and fish
  • Promotion of ethical labour in the supply chain, both in the UK and globally
  • Working alongside the (other) sustainable policy adviser to manage and develop our CSR Community group for members covering all environmental, ethical and sustainable issues.
  • Developing and promoting with the Director of Food and Sustainability the Climate Action Roadmap, including managing and ensuring the delivery of specific pathways within the Roadmap  
  • Communications – to keep BRC members up to date on sustainability related issues through marketing communications as well as represent the BRC to external audiences and specialist media in association with internal media colleagues.
  • Supporting and advising on impacts of environmental legislation and any required implementation for compliance purposes
  • To maintain a strong network of key officials and stakeholders within the UK and Europe to build alliances designed to deliver pragmatic and evidenced based measures to safeguard the environment as part of a vibrant future for retailing.
  • To work with the Membership Team, and BRC Learning to identify commercial opportunities in member recruitment, sponsorship and training
  • To be a pro-active, supportive member of the Food & Sustainability team and wider BRC teams.

 You Will Be:

  • A consummate communicator with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the strategic issues in the current and emerging sustainability agenda, with particular focus on resources, waste and packaging. 
  • An enthusiastic self-starter, able to use initiative to understand the BRC Members’ perspectives and relate this to the development of appropriate opportunities for raising both the retail industry and the BRC’s profile.
  • Able to demonstrate credibility to represent the BRC with senior external contacts, including Government officials and environmental NGO’s.
  • A trusted and pro-active team player, supporting team colleagues in driving a culture of continual improvement.
  • Able to debate and challenge constructively, using a range of communication and influencing skills.

Skills & Industry Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Policy role.
  • The Policy Advisor (sustainability) will have hands on experience in an environmental/sustainability policy context.
  • Experienced campaigner, able to bring in new thinking and initiative to the team.
  • Experience in formulating consultation responses.

The BRC has a very flexible hybrid working policy based on trust and respecting work life balance that will allow colleagues to shape their work week with blend of remote and office working.  We have a fantastic new office in the Seven Dials area near Covent Garden for when you need it. This is a part time role for 21 hours per week.
