A modern digital learning experience

A lesson learnt from some winning brands of the Pandemic crisis such as Brew Dog or Patagonia is that the secret to resilience and sustained growth is the ability of combining profit with relentless focus on the mega trends such business model evolution, the value of brand purpose, carbon-neutrality, diversity and inclusion, the ruthless focus on reducing cost and the increased power of the consumer. We also saw a lot of advancements in data technology — most notably the maturation of AI and data analytics with some businesses changing their people structures to make data an organisational strength.

In 2021, the BRC Leaders’ Summer School has been rebuilt in response to these mega trends, and to guide retail leaders in driving change for a more resilient and greener sector. The School comes from a rich heritage of the Oxford Summer School (also known as OSS Retail), spanning over 90 years. In June 2019, British Retail Consortium acquired OSS Retail as part of the Better Jobs campaign and our ongoing commitment to repositioning retail as a career of choice.

We have redesigned the OSS programmes for a modern, digital first learning experience and to reflect our commitment to developing future facing skills.

What is covered this year?

The BRC Leaders’ Summer School offers two programmes: The Emerging Leaders (former OSS Foundation), and The Transforming Leaders (former OSS Academy). Both programmes leverage four themes that we believe will shape our industry — Profit, Planet, People and Purpose.

Who should attend?

The Emerging Leader programme is designed for those new in a leadership role, or those that have the potential to step into a leadership role within 12-18 months.

The Transforming Leader programme is designed for those already in a leadership role and with a proven track record of experience and influence. They may be responsible for a team or lead a function.

We have secured a number of eminent industry leaders and influencers to come together and deliver this unique learning experience.

We will continue to build on the OSS legacy of presenting an unrivalled learning opportunity for retailers by retailers, whilst delivering a one-of-a kind blended learning and networking platform. We bring together inspirational speakers, disruptors, and thought leaders from across the entire industry who will share their knowledge, experiences, and skills to challenge your thinking and inspire creativity.

Return on Investment (ROI) and line manager involvement

BRC is committed to ensuring the practical application of learning and measurable outcomes. Both programmes incorporate a dedicated support to enable all line managers/sponsors to become part of the delegates’ learning journey. We ensure that the delegates’ achievements are aligned with the organisational strategic objectives, therefore, the line managers/sponsors will receive a dedicated support package with recommendations on how to share and embed the learning in their organisations to secure ROI.

THE PROGRAMME FORMAT & DELIVERY STRUCTURE

The 2021 programme is delivered online via BRC Learning platform and will run from June to September 2021. Both programmes are based on the evidenced 70:20:10 approach to learning and development, and will cover the same breadth and depth, but with differentiated focus. We use diversified forms of learning to ensure unique experience and honour the legacy of our School.

Learning methods

Passive Learning: learning content available on the BRC Learning platform. Content will engage and enhanced with short videos and animations. We will address more complex topics through live lecture sessions.

Active Learning: polls, quick tests, and the opportunity to ‘try and fail’ in a safe environment. Some topics will be ‘animated’ by the addition of the industry expert, where learners will take part and ask questions.

Adaptive Learning: learners will work through the content at their own pace and there will be additional links and reading for practical application.

Social Learning learners will work in coach lead groups through guided conversations. Powered by Circles 

The registration process for the Summer School 2021 has now finished. We have over 130 retailers from all corners of the industry coming together to network and challenge their thinking.

The next year's programme will probably be different and we are hoping for a blended learning experience to ensure all delegates can fully benefit from networking within our community.
