Responding to Policy Exchange’s new report Global Champion: The Case for Unilateral Free Trade, Andrew Opie, Director of Food Policy at the British Retail Consortium said:

“British farmers are at the heart of our supply chain delivering most of the food we sell and would be very concerned by policies which threaten their long term sustainability. Even this report acknowledges that British farmers would be amongst the worst affected if tariffs were dropped to zero unilaterally. We want to see a more balanced approach to trade and agricultural support. We already have zero tariffs on all the food we import from Europe and the focus should be to maintain that and build on it through new trade deals.”
