In 2020, the BRC launched an ambitious plan to bring the industry to net zero by 2040. Now, nearly 100 of our members have pledged their support, reflecting the urgency of the climate crisis and the role retail can play UK’s net zero journey.

The Roadmap is structured around five pathways that help retailers on their journey to decarbonisation:

  • Pathway 1: Putting greenhouse gas data at the core of business decision-making
  • Pathway 2: Operating efficient sites powered by renewable energy
  • Pathway 3: Moving to low carbon logistics
  • Pathway 4: Sourcing sustainably
  • Pathway 5: Helping employees and customers live low carbon lifestyles

Why become a signatory?

The Climate Action Roadmap provides a clear, deliverable vision for decarbonising retail, focused on collaborative action. We work with experts across sustainability and retail to provide clarity on the practical actions that retailers can take across the supply chain, and address policy and market barriers. By becoming a signatory, you will be able to:

  • Promote your commitment to delivering net zero alongside the UK’s biggest retail brands
  • Collaborate with other retailers to develop consistent positions and approaches on some of decarbonisation’s hardest problems
  • Access practical advice on topics related to Scope 3 emissions, decarbonising logistics, sourcing renewables and engaging with suppliers among others
  • Participate in shaping the Climate Action Roadmap’s deliverables across the pathways to ensure they are best suited to the needs of retailers
  • Access expert advice from our pathway partners
  • Participate in shaping BRC’s response to key climate policies

How much does it cost?

Nothing. All BRC Retail Members can become a Roadmap Signatory at no cost. If your business is not currently a member of BRC but would like to find out more, please contact us here.

What does being a Signatory mean?

Being a signatory is by no means onerous, but it is important that signatories engage with the programme rather than simply putting their name to it. In practice, this means committing to:

  1. Achieving the targets established under the Climate Action Roadmap
  2. Reporting on your progress when required
  3. Participating in at least one of the five pathways, including attending quarterly pathway group meetings and contributing to pathway deliverables when required
