Following a call for information on environmental claims last year, and consultation on draft guidance in May, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) published its ‘Green Claims Code’.

The Code is part of a wider awareness campaign which the CMA has launched ahead of COP26

The aim of the Code is to help businesses understand how to communicate their green credentials while reducing the risk of misleading shoppers. It focuses on six principles that are based on existing consumer law.

The CMA confirmed that it will carry out a full review of misleading green claims, both on and offline, at the start of 2022. Retailers should check their green claims against the Code and seek legal advice if they are unsure whether their claims comply with the law.
