Why are we at World Skills?
At Sainsbury’s we’re passionate about our heritage and values and we have been since 1869. We know without our colleagues, our company wouldn’t be where it is today and we work to encourage colleagues to live our values every day. Developing our colleagues and offering career progression is a key driver for our business. We have supported the BRC (British Retail Consortium) to develop the Rethink Retail website, to showcase alongside other employers, the wide range of varied and exciting retail careers available.
We will be at WorldSkills to share an understanding around the history of retail with students, teachers and parents, and demonstrate some of the development solutions we have to support colleagues to be the best they can be. We’ll also be sharing personal stories, where we’ve come from and where we are now, to illustrate how rewarding and diverse a career in retail can be.
What activities will we be doing?
Our interactive achieve wall will showcase our heritage and retail history and we’ll have access to some of the training materials and resources both in print and digitally, to highlight our blended learning approach. Our hands on visual merchandising activity will give students the opportunity to dress a bay of clothing and see how our colleagues translate the plans into real life, in store displays.
Career information and paths at Sainsbury's
Our vision is ‘to be the most trusted retailer where people love to work and shop’. It’s important that every single one of our colleagues feels they can fulfil their potential and our customers feel welcome when they shop with our multi-brand, multi-channel business. We have a range of career pathways and development opportunities that colleagues can access to support their own personal development journey.
Here are some great internal development solutions where colleagues can learn in different ways.
• Opportunities to learn from each other
• Traditional classroom sessions
Our Bakery and Food colleges, run and owned by Sainsbury’s are bespoke environments that give our colleagues the opportunity to develop their food craft skills.
The programmes are structured and support the development of skills, knowledge and behaviours - enabling colleagues to earn whilst they learn. We’ve offered high quality Apprenticeship programmes since 1974 and continue to expand our offer to support our future skills requirements. We now have 33 programmes, supporting Bakery, Butchery and Retail from entry level skills, to degree level programmes and we support senior leaders and colleague in professional service teams like Accountancy.
