The Government has today (22 December) confirmed the process for paying back business rates relief given during the 2020/21 financial year.

Ratepayers are advised to write to Treasury (or other relevant devolved administrations) setting out the value and the date of the proposed repayment.

Government has said that it will legislate in 2021 to ensure that any repayments are treated as if they were business rates payments and so should be deductible for tax purposes. The Government also intends to specify the timing of the deduction as the same period the original payment of business rates would have related to.
