Summary
This webinar reviews trends in the retail labour market: the industry’s employment, furlough rates, as well as a synopsis of the nature of jobs transformation.
In addition, the 2021 outlook for the retail workforce is outlined within the context of the digital transformation of our industry.
2020 was a tumultuous year for retail. The pandemic has accelerated pre-existing consumer trends at an incredible pace. With non-essential stores closed for months and people apprehensive about health risks, households shifted to online purchases, which rose at an unprecedented speed. In 2020, 46% of all Non-Food purchases were done online, compared to just 30% in 2019, with 87% of UK households having made some online purchase in 2020. The shift to online means technology has brought a structural change in retail and has reshaped every aspect of it. And at the forefront of this industry transformation is the transformation of its workforce.
