April 2020 ONS Retail Sales analysis

The ONS Retail Sales Index (RSI) for April 2020 released today were in line with economist' expectations, with a seasonally-adjusted month-on-month decline of -15.2% excluding fuel.

Indeed, the comparable headline to the BRC-KPMG Retail Sales Monitor (RSM), a non-seasonally adjusted year-on-year decline of 18.6% in value, confirmed the dramatic effect of the lockdown, that the RSM, published on 13 May, had quantified at -19.1%.
