Key initiatives

There are a large number of commodity-specific and general initiatives of relevance to raw material decarbonisation. These are summarised below.

UK initiatives

  • WRAP Courtauld Commitment 2025 - A series of voluntary agreements that to improve resource efficiency and reduce GHG emissions of the UK grocery sector, including work with upstream suppliers.

  • WRAP Plastic Pact – A collaborative initiative focused on a circular plastics economy. Targets for members include eliminating problematic single-use packaging and making 100% of plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

  • Palm oil

•   Retailers Palm Oil Group – Global initiative that has been working for over ten years in support of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RPSO)'s mission to 'make sustainable palm oil the norm'.

•   UK Sustainable Palm Initiative and UK Roundtable on Palm Oil - The UK Sustainable Palm Oil Initiative encompasses the UK Roundtable on Sourcing Sustainable Palm Oil, an industry alliance that aims to promote the uptake of sustainable palm oil in the UK and create incentives for sustainable production.

•   Palm Oil Transparency Coalition – collaboration of UK and European retailers who undertake annual assessment of first importer deforestation policies and action.

  • Soy

•   Retail Soy Group - The Retail Soy Group (RSG) was formed in 2013 to address a sector-wide gap in addressing demand for sustainably produced soya. It is an independent group of international retailers working collaboratively to find industry-wide solutions for soy for their animal feed and human food supply chains.

•   UK Sustainable Soy Initiative and UK Roundtable on Soy - brings together significant players in the UK soya market, creating a pre-competitive space for companies and industry associations to work together to achieve a secure, resilient, sustainable supply of soya to the UK, with joint progress monitoring and reporting.

Global initiatives

  • Accountability Framework – Influential set of common norms and guidance for establishing, implementing, and demonstrating progress on ethical supply chain commitments in agriculture and forestry.

  • Action for Sustainable Derivatives – An initiative that brings together companies in the cosmetics, home, personal care, and oleochemicals industries to collectively tackle supply chain issues around palm oil derivatives.

  • Ellen Macarthur Foundation: A foundation supporting the transition to a circular economy. It enables sharing of information and best practices through its member network.

  • Greenhouse Gas Protocol Land and Removals Guidance – The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is developing new standards/guidance on how companies and organisations should account for greenhouse gas emissions and carbon removals from land use, land use change, bioenergy, and related topics in their greenhouse gas inventories, building on the Corporate Standard and Scope 3 Standard.

  • The Fashion Pact – Led by executives representing a significant fraction of the fashion industry, including luxury, apparel and sportswear brands. The Pact’s common agenda centres around science based targets for climate change mitigation, biodiversity, and ocean pollution.

  • Forests

•   CGF Forest Positive Coalition of Action – initiative to accelerate efforts to remove commodity-driven deforestation from individual supply chains.

•   Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 - A multi-stakeholder platform initiated to support the implementation of private-sector commitments to remove deforestation from palm oil, beef, soy and pulp/paper supply chains. Hosted by the World Economic Forum.
