People are the heart of retail.
The industry is the largest private sector employer with around 3 million jobs and a further 2.7 million in UK supply chains. As the industry continues to transform, we aim to support retail’s role as a provider of more highly skilled jobs, and as a driver for equity, diversity and inclusion, representing the customers it serves and the colleagues that make up the industry’s vibrant workforce.
New technologies are helping create more efficient businesses, better customer experiences, and an evolution in the retail workforce. Upskilling is vital to harness this and support new business models. Leaders will need to maximise the opportunities and mitigate the risks.
The industry is committed to delivering lifelong learning opportunities and investing in apprenticeships and training. The BRC offers leadership development for retailers and advocates for a coordinated approach to employment, skills and training policies. Collaboration with government is in the backbone of this work.
