The figures are sourced primarily from the Office for National Statistics, deriving data from national accounts, the Monthly Business Survey – Retail Sales Index and the Labour Force Survey. Other sources include the Insolvency Service, HMRC, the Annual Survey of Hourly Earnings as well as the Business Register and Employment Survey.

The total value of sales is £483bn (non-seasonally adjusted, ex. automotive fuel, current prices), in the 12 months to September 2025.

The average growth rate between 1987-2024 was 3.9%.

Total Sales in Volume Terms

The total volume of sales is £472bn (seasonally adjusted, ex. automotive fuel, 2022 prices), in the 12 months to September 2025.

The average growth rate between 1995-2024 was 2.0%.

Gross Value Added (GVA)

 

The Wholesale and Retail (ex. motor vehicles) industry generates £212.9bn (6.7% of the UK economy), in the four quarters to 2025 Q2, when total input costs are subtracted from total revenue.

The average growth rate 1991-2024 was 1.2%.

Online Sales % of Total Retail

 

The share of all retail sales taking place over the internet is 28.0%, as of September 2025.
