3 Reasons to Keep Nature on the Agenda
Nature is rapidly climbing the agenda – globally, nationally, and across the UK retail sector. With growing regulatory pressure, shifting consumer expectations and the urgent need to address biodiversity loss, retailers have a critical role to play.
Here are three things every UK retailer should know to keep nature firmly on the agenda:
1. The Climate-Nature nexus
Nature and climate are two sides of the same coin. We know that nature-based solutions can be the cure to our carbon emissions and more often than not, the risks to business operations are . The UK’s Environmental Improvement Plan and the Global Biodiversity Framework both call for protecting 30% of land and sea by 2030. Retailers should align their nature strategies with climate targets, using frameworks like the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) to assess risks and opportunities across their value chains. Retailers need to get ready for nature-related disclosures - and the earlier you start, the better positioned you’ll be. Check out our event with the Green Finance Initiative on 7th July 2025.
2. Regulation Is Coming – Get Ready
From the EU Deforestation Regulations (EUDR) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) to an evolving disclosure landscape focusing on nature (TNFD to Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)), the regulatory landscape is shifting quickly. Retailers need to start thinking more strategically around nature and embed nature into governance, risk management, and reporting processes. Take a look at BRC’s Plan for Nature summaries to give you a practical start to help you stay ahead.
3. Collaboration Is the New Competitive Edge
No retailer can tackle nature loss alone. Whether it’s through partnerships with NGOs like WWF, peer learning via BRC roundtables, or joint reporting pilots, collaboration accelerates progress. We’re seeing a shift from competition to collaboration and retailers are coming together to define what good looks like on nature.
