Crime has once again surged to the forefront of concerns for many retail colleagues.

With the alarming rise in violence, abuse, and theft, the BRC remains committed to advocating for increased police resources and prioritisation. Furthermore, we are pushing for a strong show of government support in the form of a standalone offence to protect retail workers.

We are also ensuring that local areas have a central role in our advocacy. This week, we took part in the Brixton Crime Conference 'Dare to Share', with the goal of fostering stronger relationships between the police and local businesses, as well as rebuilding trust and enhancing reporting mechanisms.

Our local campaign is set for further expansion, and we're inviting members to contribute to our local crime initiative. We are seeking data contributions from regions across the UK. If you're eager to participate, please reach out to william.maddison@brc.org.uk.

This week also sees us addressing the South London Magistrates Association regarding the state of retail crime and discussing ways the judiciary can better handle cases involving our retail colleagues. The aim is to bolster their protection at every stage of the criminal justice system.
The association has kindly extended an invitation to our members to visit a courthouse, accompanied by a magistrate. The visit includes sitting in on cases and receiving explanations of the legal process. Our recent visit was invaluable in comprehending the strains on the system, and how we, as retailers, can better provide support, particularly through the use of victim impact statements.
