Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is a new way for sole traders and landlords to report their income and expenses to HMRC and submit their tax returns. From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 from self-employment and property will be required to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Customers will need to use software that works with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax to:
· create, store and correct digital records of your self-employment and property income and expenses
· send your quarterly updates to HMRC
· submit your tax return by 31 January the following year
To find out more information, including when to start and how it works, visit HMRC’s new MTD for Income Tax website.
To help ensure a smooth transition, customers and agents can sign up early for the 25/26 tax year and get familiar with the new system and ways of working before it becomes a legal requirement. Taking part helps customers learn about the new system, resolve any issues in advance and receive support from HMRC’s MTD team. Sign up now on GOV.UK.
Sole traders and landlords can watch a recorded HMRC webinar to understand the legal requirements of MTD. There is also a regular live webinar including Q&A, about the steps to take to get ready for MTD, including how to plan for it, actions to take and what to do after signing up (a recorded version can also be viewed).
