The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee has published a report on why behaviour change is necessary to deliver the UK’s ambition of net zero by 2050 and what steps Government, businesses and society can play in making the necessary changes. It is particularly relevant to our work in Pathway 5 (consumers) of our Climate Action Roadmap which is working with members to help change consumer behaviour and the market for greener products.
We, alongside a number of our members and other organisations and think tanks gave evidence to the Committee. It considered key areas where changes in consumer behaviour could make a difference to climate change and if there were learnings from work on behavioural change in other policy areas.
The report concludes current Government activity engaging consumers and helping them to make better decisions is inadequate. It says areas Government should focus on are travel, heating, consumption and diet. It also says communication needs to be supported by greater intervention including regulation and taxation. It also recommends businesses to engage consumers and employees as well as offering affordable greener products.
