We have met with representatives of the Expert Advisory Group - Maths to 18, which was set up following the Prime Minister new ambition for all young people to study maths to age 18, helping them develop the skills they need to be better equipped for the modern economy, to discuss how retailers could feed in the group's set of recommendations.

The group will provide advice to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Education on what maths knowledge and skills are needed for jobs in the modern economy, and therefore what ‘best in class’ modern maths content should look like and will also advise on how this should be reflected in a post-16 education system in which all young people study meaningful maths to age 18. This set of recommendations will inform government policy and delivery decisions.

to inform their report, group is seeking retailers' feedback on three questions:

  • What maths do you think 16-18 year olds should be focused on?
  • What maths skills do employees typically need to do their jobs?
  • Gaps in maths knowledge/skills you find particularly among young recruits (including apprentices)?

The Advisory Group will report to the PM and SoS in July, so if you want to share your views or have a chat with them directly, please contact Luiza on luiza.gomes@brc.org.uk by 28 June 2023.
