As part of the government’s crackdown on illegal working, the civil penalty for employing an illegal worker is increasing. It will be raised from £15,000 to £45,000 per illegal worker for a first breach, and from £20,000 to £60,000 per illegal worker for repeat breaches.

The legislation is due to be laid in Parliament in the autumn, and expected to take effect in January 2024.

Later this year, the Home Office are expected to launch a consultation on options to strengthen action against licensed businesses employing illegal workers.
