B&Q’s Inclusive Language Guide
Ensuring that all colleagues at B&Q are empowered to grow their cultural intelligence (CQ) and behave in an inclusive manner, B&Q’s colleague networks have supported the creation of an Inclusive Language Guide.
The Guide is used across the business to support inclusive communication and includes:
- An Introduction to Using Inclusive Language
- Legal Obligations and The Equality Act (2010) and Ireland’s Equality Laws (ROI)
- Top Tips for Using Inclusive Language and How to Avoid Using Non-Inclusive Language
- Understanding Microaggressions
- Knowing the Difference between Bullying vs Banter
- Information on Age, Sex, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Race and Ethnicity, Disability, and Neurodivergence
- Further Belonging Resources (for internal colleagues)

Alignment with the BRC D&I Charter’s Pledges
The BRC Diversity & Inclusion Charter emphasizes creating inclusive workplaces, supporting underrepresented groups, and fostering a culture of equality. B&Q’s Inclusive Language Guide aligns with Pledge 5 of the BRC Diversity and Inclusion Charter, where businesses are ‘committed to creating a respectful, inclusive work environment within which every employee has the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the company’s vision and values’.
