On Wednesday, government launched a consultation on an extension of the right to work (RtW) scheme as part of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill, with a view to mitigate the risk of illegal working.
Government will extend checks to include businesses hiring ‘gig economy’ and zero-hours workers in sectors, and the proposals could also have an impact on how retailers conduct checks for third party and suppliers.
This consultation seeks views on:
- how this RtW changes should be operationalised and enforced
- how processes can be simplified to make it easier for employers to fulfil their responsibilities
This will give businesses the opportunity to help shape the guidance and the statutory codes of practice. These underpin the right to work checks that will be required to confirm that individuals have the right to work in the UK.
The consultation runs for 6 weeks and it closes on 10 December – read the full consultation papers here.
Please note that, at this stage, the BRC isn’t planning to submit a response on behalf of members but recommending that those impacted respond directly. If you have strong views and concerns and would like us to engage in this consultation, please ensure to contact Luiza (Luiza.Gomes@brc.org.uk) by 21 November.
