We’re excited to welcome Scott Ward as a Group Coach for this year’s BRC Leader Summer School. Scott, a former participant, brings extensive leadership experience and a strong commitment to coaching and development. We sat down with him to discuss his journey, motivations, and what he hopes to bring to the programme.
From Participant to Coach
Scott’s journey began last year when he attended the BRC Leader Summer School as a delegate. His natural coaching ability and belief in continuous learning made the transition to Group Coach a logical next step.
“I have a natural coaching ability... I see every day as a learning day,” Scott says. “Becoming a Group Coach allows me to develop myself while also helping others grow.”
The process was straightforward—Scott expressed his interest on his feedback form and had informal discussions with the BRC Learning team to discuss his motivations and how he could contribute to the programme.
He appreciated the open and supportive approach of the BRC Learning team, which helped him gain a clear understanding of the expectations and responsibilities of a Group Coach. “It wasn’t a formal interview—more of a two-way conversation about what I could bring and what I’d gain from the role,” he explains.
This transparent process reassured Scott that his skills and leadership experience would be valued. “I liked that it was a natural conversation rather than a test. It felt like an extension of the learning environment that the Summer School fosters,” he adds.
Support from Central Co-op
Scott’s employer, Central Co-op, has been fully behind his involvement. “We have seven principles, and two of those are self-help and self-responsibility,” he explains. His company values learning opportunities and the insights he brings back from the programme.
“The company invested in me by sending me to the summer school, and they’re always interested in what I learn and bring back,” he adds.
Looking Ahead to the Summer School
Scott is looking forward to being part of the group coaching community and further developing his leadership skills. “I’m excited about supporting and developing others, helping them find their path a little quicker,” he says.
His own experience with group coaching last year left a lasting impact, particularly his interactions with his coach, Luigi. “Luigi was brilliant—he never gave me the answers but asked the right questions. He created such a warm, supportive environment that you never wanted to leave,” Scott remembers.
Bringing His Own Style to Coaching
With 25 years of leadership experience, Scott has developed numerous leaders and honed his own coaching style. “I’ve created more leaders than I ever thought possible,” he says. His approach is straightforward: be authentic, bold, and resilient.
“I want to be me. I’m brave, resilient, and a bit bold. That’s what I bring to my coaching,” he states.
Coaching in Action
Scott shared a memorable coaching session where he used mindfulness techniques and leadership memes to encourage self-reflection. “We did a reflection exercise—controlled our breathing and thought about a time when someone worked really well. It sparked meaningful discussions and improvements.”
Giving Back to the Programme
Scott is eager to contribute to the programme and learn from the dynamic speakers and discussions. “I’m looking forward to giving back and being part of the energy that makes the summer school so special,” he says.
We’re delighted to have Scott Ward on board as a Group Coach. His passion, experience, and commitment to leadership development will make a real impact on this year’s participants. Stay tuned for more insights from Scott as we approach the BRC Leader Summer School.
