What is PAS 7250?
- PAS means a Publicly Available Specification.
- This PAS is being developed by BSI and focusses on light electric vehicles, specifically the safety of lithium-ion battery systems used in e-bikes and e-scooters.
Work Carried Out
- A steering group was convened to take the PAS forward. The group developed a draft process to define the headings and scope to be included within the PAS, and a technical author was appointed to prepare the draft document.
- The first draft was shared with the steering group on 5 December, with a limited timeframe for review and comment. Feedback was submitted, collated, and taken through a formal comment resolution process on 12 December. Following this, four further meetings were held, during which approximately 150 comments were received from the steering group.
- There was unanimous agreement that the PAS should be used to enhance existing standard specifications for e bikes and e scooters, rather than duplicating them, with a particular focus on strengthening requirements.
- Digital requirements were referred back to the BSI maintenance team and relevant committee. Much of the feedback was managed through correspondence, supplemented by additional meetings where possible.
Current Status:
- The approach taken has been described as unusual, and it was noted that the initial document did not fully meet the needs of a PAS.
- The high volume of comments, combined with a lack of structured meetings, made resolving feedback via correspondence challenging.
- The key priority is to finalise the document and publish it for public consultation by the end of March.
Next Steps:
The document is expected to reach Draft for Public Comment (DPC) by the end of March → BRC will share this with members and ask for feedback.
This is especially relevant for businesses selling e‑bikes and e‑scooters, and for Food‑to‑Go businesses, to help understand the PAS and whether it is useful for e‑bike and e‑scooter use in their operations.
