Retail Week’s BRC Think Tank Social Mobility session - meeting notes

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) hosted a Think Tank during Retail Week Live 2024 to explore the opportunities and constrains of social mobility in retail. 

Participants were divided into discussion groups and posed a number of questions to prompt the conversations, chaired by Helen Dickinson, CEO of the BRC. 

The overall feeling is that many retailers have policies and strategies that tap into social mobility, and there was strong agreement that is a key driver of wider D&I strategies. The large majority, however, don’t have a dedicated social mobility strategy and collect only limited relevant data. The main challenges identified were around the definition of social mobility, the kind of data requested to track progress and how to ensure colleagues understand the need to share that information. A range of ideas and solutions were mentioned by participants
