ABOUT THE BRC
The retail sector is facing significant change as sustainability, resource efficiency and circular economy principles continue to move up the political and corporate agenda. Representing over 200 major retailers, the BRC plays a leading role in shaping policy, supporting members and driving industry collaboration across some of the UK's most important sustainability challenges.
We're seeking a Sustainability Policy Adviser to lead on circular economy policy, helping retailers navigate regulatory change whilst influencing the future direction of sustainability policy across the UK.
THE ROLE
You'll lead the development of policy positions across key circular economy issues, representing retailers with government, regulators and industry stakeholders. The role covers major policy areas including Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR), Deposit Return Schemes (DRS), Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT), Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) and wider circular economy priorities across packaging, waste, textiles, electronics and food waste.
Working closely with members, you'll produce consultation responses, policy briefings and industry guidance, whilst facilitating working groups, events and collaborative initiatives that help retailers respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal role holder will have:
- Experience within sustainability, environmental policy, public affairs or regulation. Strong knowledge of circular economy policy, including areas such as packaging, waste, electronics, batteries, textiles and food waste,
- Experience developing policy positions, guidance or consultation responses.
- Understanding of the UK political and regulatory landscape.
- Excellent written, verbal and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Strong project management and organisational capabilities.
- Degree-level education or relevant professional qualifications.
Candidates from trade associations, consultancies, retailers, regulators, NGOs and broader sustainability or policy environments are likely to be particularly relevant.
