BRC Meeting with the Environment Agency on Mandatory Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme

The BRC is hosting a discussion with Defra and the Environment Agency on Mandatory Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme (MWEL). Read more about the scheme here.

The scheme will be implemented across water-using domestic products such as taps, showers, toilets etc

This session will give members the opportunity to hear the latest information, discuss what the requirements mean for retailers and raise questions directly with the Environment Agency and Defra.

Draft Agenda:

  • MWEL Programme Update
  • Clear outline of products now included within the scope of the scheme
  • Checklist outlining what retailers, including those that are also manufacturers, should ask their suppliers.
  • Clear outline of timeline for implementation and the WTO notification.
  • Retailer implementation and practical considerations
  • Q&A with retailers, including concerns, feedback and input on guidance.

Who Should Attend?

  • Product Compliance – understand the requirements, determine which products are in scope and oversee compliance.
  • Buying / Commercial Managers – those responsible for bathroom/plumbing products and relevant white goods.
  • E-commerce Teams – labels need to be visible online. Where the price is shown, the label needs to be visible, including on listing/product pages where applicable.
  • Website Content – product information, imagery and specifications online.
  • Store Operations – the requirement also applies to physical stores and labels must be clearly visible to consumers at the point of sale.
  • Marketing– price-led product promotions will require review. The draft requirements indicate that where supplier promotional material includes the price or energy-efficiency class, the water-efficiency class and range must also be provided.

Inform your Supply Chain: Ensure the necessary water-efficiency information and labels are obtained from manufacturers/suppliers.
