20 December – 27 December

27 December – Packaging Tax

Following a briefing from the BRC, the Daily Telegraph outlined the concerns of the retail industry that the new packaging tax may not positively impact the environment as was intended as a result of the lack of legal ringfencing of the funds collected by local councils.

This week we launched a new report entitled ‘UK Retail 2025 Net Zero Stocktake’ which provides a comprehensive assessment of progress, barriers, and priorities for the retail industry on the road to Net Zero. We secured good coverage in the trades and our CEO, Helen Dickinson, wrote an op-ed for The Grocer.

17 December – ONS CPI

The latest Consumer Price Index showed headline inflation easing to 3.2% and food inflation also dropping down to 4.2%. This was driven by heavy discounting from retailers, trying to entice customers ahead of Christmas.

16 December – ONS Retail Jobs

New data from the ONS revealed that retail has lost 74,000 jobs in the past year. We stated this represented 74,000 lost opportunities and urged the Government to rethink its plans around Guaranteed Hours in the Employment Rights Bill to prevent further job losses.

8 – 14 December

12 December – Payments Survey

We published our Annual Payments Survey, which showed more people switching to debit cards as well as new payment options such as Buy Now Pay Later. We also did an interview with LBC News discussing the findings.

9 December – Retail Sales Monitor

We published our November Retail Sales Monitor, which showed a very disappointing November of sales, with Black Friday failing to deliver in the way retailers had hoped. This was due to weak consumer confidence ahead of the Budget. We used it as an opportunity to encourage Government to ensure that it focuses on policies next year that will stimulate consumer confidence, so that retailers can focus on investment and growth.

8 December – Employment Rights Bill

Helen was on the Today Programme discussing what businesses need from the Employment Rights Bill for it to be workable and protect both employees and employment opportunities.
