OPSS have raised concern following a fatality earlier this year caused by legionnaires disease.
As a result of an incident where all-purpose compost was involved OPSS are encouraging retailers to ensure that packaging, safety information and consumer messaging are reviewed.
Any relevant precautions associated with handling and using the product must be communicated clearly.
Current advice for those using compost is to always wear gloves, avoid inhaling dust from the compost and use in an open environment with plenty of ventilation and to make sure users wash their hands after use prior to eating or smoking.
As a Retailer you should...
- Review products being sold within the business
- Ensure essential consumer information is clearly labelled
- On websites or in-store you could promote the purchase of gloves alongside the sale of the compost, highlighting them as a safety measure for during use.
