OPSS have published an update following their investigation into seed pods from highly toxic species of trees Cerbera Odollam and Cerbera Mangahas species. The ingestion of these seed pods has been linked to one known fatality in the UK.

To prevent further fatalities, a Regulation 28 Prevention of Future Deaths Report into the fatality was reported to OPSS. This included concerns from HM Coroner about the potential availability to UK consumers and risks of the product

Seeds pods have been sold in the market as decorative items for the home or for use in floral arrangements and as decoration for reptile terrariums.

Outcome:

Following OPSS’s investigation the product has been identified as a dangerous product under GPSR and should no longer be permitted for sale. The product is now considered high risk with the aim of protecting individuals with suicidal intention from preventable harm.
