What has changed?
- The mandatory statutory guidelines introduced on 14 August have been withdrawn.
- The withdrawal took effect on 22 October.
The Government has withdrawn the statutory guidelines on the supply of disposable barbecues, which were introduced on 14 August.
Following engagement with stakeholders as well as a letter sent to OPSS by the BRC (view the letter here). The Government confirmed that the guidelines were withdrawn on 22 October.
The withdrawal does not change the need for customers to exercise appropriate caution when using disposable barbecues.
As with any source of ignition used outdoors, including fireworks and garden incinerators, disposable barbecues should continue to be used responsibly.
OPSS advises for customers to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take account of local conditions and any relevant fire safety advice.
Retailers should therefore be aware that, while the statutory guidelines have been withdrawn, appropriate safety messaging around the responsible use of disposable barbecues remains important.
