UK retailers join call on PM for mandatory due diligence legislation

Leading UK retailers are part of more than 30 organisations with a combined turnover of over £130 billion calling on the Government to commit to mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence legislation (mHREDD).

In partnership with the Ethical Trading Initiative and Corporate Justice Coalition, the BRC joined a coalition of leading businesses, unions, and civil society organisations signing an open letter to the PM and Ministers in support of a new law to ensure businesses take reasonable steps to prevent human rights and environmental harm.

The letter clearly sets out the business case for proportionate legislation grounded in the UN Guiding Principles and OECD Guidelines:

  • A level playing field to reward responsible retailers
  • Alignment with international standards and regulation to reduce the cost and complexity of a patchwork approach
  • Enhanced voluntary efforts and stronger transparency across UK supply chains
  • Protecting workers, communities, and our customers from connection to harms

The letter urges Government to report and deliver on the recommendations of DBIST's Responsible Business Conduct review.
