Background

DBT launched a consultation in March 2026 (view here).

This would involved an amendment to the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (FFRs) (read a summary of the current regulation here).

There is a push from industry to reduce the use of chemical flame retardants within furniture. It has been noted that one of the risks during fire incidents is not necessarily the fire itself, but rather the inhalation of these chemicals.
