HR Technical Call - Workplace Monitoring Technologies

The government's Make Work Pay consultations are coming thick and fast - and among them is one addressing Workplace Monitoring Technologies, and the potential responsibilities or obligations for employers when they seek to introduce them.

To discuss the consultation and give retailers the opportunity to share views with and ask questions to government, we will be holding an HR Technical Call on Tuesday 8th September, 11-12, with DBIST officials.

Please email Ben (ben.george@brc.org.uk) for the meeting invite.

Consultation Details

The consultation takes forward the Make Work Pay commitment on surveillance technologies and seeks views on the principles the government should promote with respect to workplace monitoring technologies (WMT) and how the government should address the use of WMT in the workplace.

WMT refers to digital tools that observe, record or analyse worker activity or performance. This includes systems to manage timekeeping or access logs, algorithmic task allocation and automated performance assessment.

The government wants to ensure that WMT supports workplace efficiency, productivity and growth in a way which maintains transparency, fairness and trust among workers. The consultation seeks views on three options:

1. a statutory Code of Practice supported by non-statutory guidance
2. a mandatory consult and negotiate requirement
3. a guidance only approach

AGENDA

  1. Consultation narrative and principles for responsible use of WMT
  2. Practical implications of consultation proposals
  3. Preferred proposal and policy outcome
  4. Outstanding policy questions to resolve
