Background
Under an environmental act amendment of the Clean Air Act (1993) in 2021, it is an offence to use an unauthorised controlled solid fuel for use within a smoke control area in the UK.
Exceptions to this legislation are only acceptable if a fuel is under an exemption as specified by Defra. Outdoor appliances such as pizza ovens and fire pits are exempt from the legislation as well as charcoal and pellets.
Smoke controlled areas are defined by each nation with an interactive map and are not defined by postcodes. In order to determine the areas the map must be compared with postcodes.
For a fuel to be authorised it must be added by the vendor to Defra’s authorised fuel list. There are separate lists for each UK country.
