Amid growing concerns around global warming and increasingly extreme early‑season heat, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) is reminding customers how to use disposable barbecues safely to help prevent wildfires.

Recent data shows the UK recorded its hottest May temperatures on record, with highs exceeding 34°C, levels described as exceptional even for mid‑summer.

In response, the guidance has been updated to reflect these changing conditions, ensuring it remains relevant to today’s market and continues to support retailers in communicating key safety risks effectively.

Purpose of the Disposable BBQ Guidelines

The disposable BBQ guidelines are designed to support retailers and consumers in using these products safely and responsibly. They provide clear, practical advice on safe handling, placement, use, and disposal, with the aim of reducing the risk of fires, burns, and environmental damage.

The guidance also helps ensure a consistent approach across industry, supporting retailers in meeting safety expectations and communicating key risks effectively to customers.

Reason for the Update

The guidelines have been updated to reflect increased concerns around fire risk, particularly during periods of dry weather, and to align with evolving expectations from fire services, local authorities, and other stakeholders.

The update also incorporates latest best practice, lessons learned from recent incidents, and improved messaging to ensure the guidance remains clear, relevant, and effective in supporting safe consumer use and ensuring appropriate information is available at the point-of-sale.
