The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), has issued a warning following an investigation into Abrus precatorius seeds, commonly known as rosary peas.

The seeds come from a tropical plant that is toxic in all parts and contain abrin, an extremely potent poison. Often bright red with a distinctive black marking, the seeds are sold under a range of names including rosary peas, jequirity beans, lucky beans and prayer plant seeds.

OPSS has concluded that these products present a high level of risk and should no longer be available for sale, due to the serious risk of harm from accidental or intentional ingestion.
