The Government has published details of the TOM, this is their plan for delivering UK border checks for imports from the EU. The TOM contains information on the Safety and Security Declaration, certification and checks of food imports. These can be onerous so it is very important you and your supply chain understand these before new requirements come into force in October 2023.
Although the UK model is simplified compared to the EU approach, some of the innovations which will reduce the burden such as e-certification and trusted trader schemes will not be available on day 1.
The key dates to remember are
- October 2023 - requirement for export health certificates for food
- January 2024 - physical checks on imports begin at UK ports
- October 2024 - requirement for safety and security documentation begins for almost all imports
