NIRC secures better legal protections for Northern Ireland’s shopworkers

Shopworkers in Northern Ireland are to get better legal protections from customer abuse and violence.

The devolved government’s Justice Minister confirmed the move in a letter to the Northern Ireland Retail Consortium and trade union Usdaw.

It follows a joint campaign by NIRC and Usdaw over recent months. The enhanced measures will be included in a new Sentencing Bill, which is to be published next year. We’ll monitor the detail to see whether it is sufficient in light of the changes proposed for Wales and England and the existing shopworker protections in Scotland.
