The BRC is running the HR Benchmark survey quarterly to provide retail members with market intelligence for labour planning. Full access to the report is restricted to survey participants, with summary labour market statistics available for non-participant members. In the three months to June 2024:
  • Annual pay growth in retail slowed to 6.8% in Q2 2024, down from 7.4% in Q1 2024. Expected pay growth in the year to Q2 2025 was 4.4%, decreasing from 5.2% in the year to Q1 2025.
  • The average turnover rate across the workforce in Q2 2024 was 6.8%, down from 9.1% recorded in Q1 2024. Turnover was highest in warehouses and distribution (7.3%), followed by stores (6.9%), and lowest in head-office roles (5.5%).
  • There were 2.7 vacancies per 100 workers in Q2 2024, up from 2.1 vacancies in Q1 2024. Stores account for 2.8 vacancies per 100 employees. The figure for head offices was 3.5, and for warehouses and distribution roles 1.0
  • The average sickness rate across roles was 3.2%, down from 4.6% recorded in Q1 2024. The rate of absence was highest in warehouse and distribution (4.4%), followed by stores (3.4%) roles, and lowest in head-office roles (1.9%).
