Following discussions and engagement with our members, the BRC has published a plan to kickstart efforts to help tackle and mitigate the rise in what has been termed 'Friendly' and 'First Party' fraud. This type of fraud occurs when a legitimate charge is fraudulently challenged through a retailers refund process or the charge back system and it can lead to financial and other harms to retailers.

This has become an increasing problem over recent years and particularly since the pandemic saw an increase in the growth of digital retail and the introduction of easier delivery, return and refund processes.

The attachment below sets out a plan for how we will work collaboratively with our members and engage with a range of stakeholders, including payment providers, banks, regulators and government, to begin to tackle this.
