Government tables new standalone offence clause

The Government has tabled amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill to give effect to its intention to create a new offence of an assault on a retail worker and to improve sentences for shoplifting.

The clauses will be debated imminently in the Report Stage of the Bill in the Commons, after which the Bill will go to the Lords. It is likely to be the autumn before it becomes an Act.
